A new top-level domain, .eco, will be available in early 2017. Organizations, businesses and people working for positive environmental change are able to apply before December 16, 2016 for up to three .eco domain names for an organization or an upcoming campaign. The domain creators are giving 500 domain names for free in this process, anticipating that the names will become expensive and competitive after the domain launches.
According to their website “You can apply for a .eco domain grant if:
- Your organization is a not-for-profit, charity or government
- Environmental work is central to your mission
- You plan to actively use your .eco domain within a year of receiving it”
